Isle of South Uist

Askernish Golf course (Old Tom Morris)

The course and club has a long and almost mythical history. Old Tom Morris came to South Uist in 1891 to create a course at the request of the wealthy land owner, Lady Cathcart, so that she could impress her high society guests. Old Tom created an 18 hole course that was maintained by the local crofters until the early 1920s when the demand for golf declined and social pressures on the local people meant that maintaining the course was not viable.

Over the course of the next 80 years the course that Old Tom created was taken back by the wild. In 2005 a group of locals decided that they wanted their course back and set to work, with the help of some of the golf industry’s biggest and best names, restoring this ’lost’ course. In 2008 the course was reopened as an 18 hole facility that has received the highest acclaim from golfing media and beyond.

If you're a keen golfer and fancy trying out the 'Old Tom Morris' course, let us know, we are more than welcome to book on your behalf.

Golfers of all abilities will be made welcome.

Fishing

South Uist has some of the finest and most exceptional brown trout and sea trout fishing in the world. The brown trout are truly wild which is a rare resource in this age of stocked fisheries. There are approximately 800 lochs and lochans between the island of South Uist and Benbecula and virtually all of these contain wild brown trout. The hill lochs tend mainly to have large populations of small fish, albeit 'monster' fish are caught there from time to time, the best baskets of brown trout are caught in the machair lochs

You can fish the lochs through Storas Uibhist or the South Uist Angling Club. The lochs reserved by Storas Uibhist are some of the most famous wild trout lochs in the world.  Brown trout range from 1lb to 5lb and sea trout can be up to 7lb.  Many of the lochs are ‘machair’ lochs, in which the high alkalinity of the water caused by the shell sand bed produces large and beautifully conditioned trout.

The season for brown trout runs from 1st April to 30th September.  Sea trout/salmon season runs from early/mid July to 31st October.

We can book lochs, boats and ghillies through the South Uist Estates, or if you fancy, open sea fishing we can also arrange that on your behalf. The angling club lochs day permits can also be obtained through the hotel.
